CLEARING MENTAL OBSTACLES: The 5 Kleshas from the Yoga Sutras

Evon Hart, CYI 2003 | Founder
Saturday, April 18 • 2-4:00p • $45

In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes five fundamental causes of suffering known as the kleshas: ignorance, ego-identification, attachment, aversion, and fear. These patterns influence how we perceive the world and how we relate to our experiences.

In this two-hour workshop, we’ll explore the teachings on the five kleshas found in the Yoga Sutras and consider how they show up in everyday life. Through discussion, reflection, and simple practices, we’ll use these teachings as a framework for understanding the mind and cultivating greater clarity and freedom.

Open to anyone interested in the philosophical foundations of yoga and how these teachings apply to daily life.

KRISHNA DAS

Tuesday, May 12th • 6-7:30pm
Unity of Phoenix Spiritual Center
Buy tickets here.

Few figures in modern spirituality, particularly in the West, have impacted the hearts and minds of contemporary seekers as much as Krishna Das has. A devotee of the North Indian Saint, Neem Karoli Baba (Maharajji), Krishna Das has played an enormous role in popularizing the traditional practice of Kirtan in the West, taking the call-and-response chanting out of yoga centers and temples and into concert halls, becoming a worldwide icon and the best-selling western chant artist of all time. In a career spanning more than two decades, KD has released 17 acclaimed full-length albums, his music serving as an easily approachable gateway to the devotional traditions of the East. Along the way, he has evolved into an accessible if somewhat reluctant teacher, and a spiritual friend to many. He travels the world sharing his Kirtan practice and stories of his life on the Path, of Maharajiji, and advocates for bringing regular spiritual practice into our lives through retreats and workshops. During COVID times he chanted online every week for the worldwide satsang. More information on KrishnaDas.com.

NINA RAO: CHANTING AND SATSANG

Thursday, May 14th • 7:15-9pm • $30

Community Yoga is deeply honored to host Nina Rao at our studio for an evening of chanting, discussion and Q&A.

Nina learned traditional chants (bhajans) from her grandfather in a village in south India when she was nine years old. The chants quietly stayed with her until she rediscovered chanting with Krishna Das in New York in 1996. In 1998 she met her guru, Sri Siddhi Ma in the foothills of the Himalayas and spent time with her regularly for 19 years. Her childhood was spent living in and moving between many countries around the world. She transitioned from the banking world into organizing and leading photographic wildlife safaris in Africa and India, and now since 1996, is Krishna Das' business manager and accompanist, as well as chant leader on her own.

PARTNER YOGA AND MASSAGE

Evon Hart - CYI 2003, Founder
Sunday, May 17 • 4-6pm
$50 per partnership

Yoga props help us experience poses in a new and deeper way, and another person is an excellent human prop! This workshop is a fun way to experience poses differently through the support and leverage that a friend or significant other can offer. In these times of disconnect and distraction, it’s even more special to turn off devices and be fully present with another person. Students will explore some familiar and possibly some new postures, and class will also incorporate some user-friendly massage techniques.

While this class is a special way to spend time with your significant other, it is not exclusively designed for romantic partnerships. Bring a friend, family member, ask a fellow student from our community or let us know if you want to attend and need a partner.

ROOT DOWN: VINYASA + VINYL SERIES: BEASTIE BOYS

Flow led by Evon, Records by DJ Haymaker
Friday, May 22 • 6-7:30p • $20

Evon will guide the opening and closing of this flow class. In the middle, students will have space to move freely and create their own sequence so the music can be more deeply enjoyed.

DJ Haymaker will be playing Beastie Boys records — and many are surprised by the range of their catalog. Alongside the classics are instrumental tracks and deeper cuts that create a rich soundscape for practice.

Minimal instruction is offered in the Vinyasa + Vinyl series so the music can remain a central part of the experience. Best suited for students with prior yoga experience.
